It is only possible to face the Soul Collector and finish the game after getting a soul (it will appear in your inventory as a white heart on the left slot), which can be bought from a merchant or collected in the dungeon like other items. By clicking on this soul you will be teleported to a new dungeon where you can find the Soul Collector and your wife's soul.

If you don't click on the soul, you'll just be stuck in the original dungeon forever.
