    • The Most Dangerous Game

    Tested on Jan. 13/14th, 2023

Even tho the Multiplayer has been removed, it is still possible to achieve it through the pre-21.10-support - support branch.

Activate the beta branch, start the game and hop into Multiplayer Ranked match with your partner, and just kill each other.

Not sure how long this will last, better do it now than later.

Edit: I noticed that some people are still having trouble unlocking it via this method. As far as I know, this achievement used to be buggy, even in the vanilla version (experienced it first hand). What I could tell you to try, if the problem persist, is to verify the integrity of the game files before looking for a match. (Right click X-COM 2> Properties > Local Files > Verify the integrity of the game files).

That's only thing I could come up with, as it fixed my problem after trying like 4 times and no achievement, at the time (before the MP removal). Other people say it unlock after losing against your friend, another, that only the host gets it, I'm not really sure but it is better to try more alternatives. Also, starting the game with the DLC expansion (War of the Chosen) could also help.

If nothing, then emulating another OS could solve it (since MP has not been removed on Mac/Linux), even tho is a pain. (I haven't test this one, don't take my word for granted).

Mods and configs could prevent you from unlocking this achievement, so beware.

You can also do this in any mission that involves killing/destroying something and then EVAC outta there.

I used remote detonation for a very convenient tank nearby but you can also use the claymore ability or the needle/sting ability anything that lets you do damage without being detected, planting X4 in the factory will always make you visible.

If your reaper is high enough level, he can even stack 2 claymores and then blow them up in the next turn.

Be aware that patrols do know where you are and they walk ("patrol") towards you.. its bs but.. well, be careful with that.

Here is a video of how I got the achievement by killing a VIP and then escaping, I reloaded and restarted the mission with a full squad after I got it because I wanted the XP 😉

I was unable to get this achievement to work on Windows using the beta branch method described in the other guide, even after playing 10 matches or so under a variety of conditions.

What did work for me (as of 2/17/2023) was installing the regular/vanilla game on Mac (not the beta), hosting a game there (I just did Ranked Match since it pairs you up automatically without needing to invite), and winning the match -- it worked on the first try for me there.

So if you can't get it working on Windows, try it on a Mac. (Apparently it works on Linux as well but I can't confirm that personally)

I try to help my friend to get this achievement and he got it.
We try many way and this is how we got it.

    We both have all DLC.
    We install [pre-21.10-support] version.
We start game with the "War of chosen" DLC.
We select "quick match", I join first, then he join.
First I end my turn immediately, then I quit the match and back to menu.
When I quit the match, he got the achievement.

    Oh boy, what a ride.

Anyway, the game does not explain how the scoring system works and you will need 220000 points for a gold medal.

You will be able to gather such points over the 7 stages of the mini-campaign.

At the start of each stage, a score card appears telling you what points can be gained, these are ALL LIES!

Do not trust this card, only the penalties are true.

    The scoring goes like this:

You get points by killing enemies, the harder the enemy, the more points you get.

The default score for killing the weakest enemy is 1000.

A sectopod, for instance, gives you 5000 points.

For completing the stage, you get 5000 points even though the score cards tells you it will give you 10000.

During the first 5 turns, if you kill an enemy, you get bonus points, it starts at 50% more bonus points.

This is called the early bird bonus and it has a decaying effect, it loses 10% efficacy each turn.

For example, if you kill a weak enemy during the first turn, you will get 1000+500 points.

If you kill a sectopod on your first turn, you would get 5000+2500 points.

If you kill the weakest kind of enemy during the 5th turn you will get 1000+100 points.

The bonus disappears on the 6th turn.

At first I despaired because the first stage gives you around 15000 points, and if you multiply this by 7, you know you wont be able to make it.

This was before I discovered that tougher enemies give more points.

There are also TWO terror stages where you need to save civilians, these stages give at least 6000 extra points.

You need to at least rescue 6 out of 13 civilians to clear the stage, each civilian you rescue will give you 1000 points.

These were the hardest stages for me since I had to reload everytime they killed more than 3 civilians. (I wanted to save 10).

If you choose to restart a mission from the ESC menu, you will restart the mission but you will need to PAY 5000 points.

So you will restart the mission with the points you started the mission with -5000.

If you get all your soldiers killed instead, you will restart the mission without paying the 5000 points penalty.

Now, the save system in these legacy runs are a little strange but I found a good trick.

Save and exit when you are doing well.

If you mess up, wait for the alien turn THEN click ESC and go back to menu.

If you did it right, when you continue the game, you will start at the save you had OR at the beginning of the turn.

If you Exit the game or Exit to menu during your turn, the game will have a good chance to save, so if you mess up, wait for the alien turn then Exit.

Also, if you want the gold medal without worrying about rushing for early bird kills, play on Nightmare difficulty.

Nightmare difficulty will spawn extra enemies and tougher too, so thats more points to you.

As you can see in the screenshot at the end, you dont NEED the bonus points to get the gold medal in nightmare mode.

I even got wounded a lot...around 10 or 12 times although the soldier lost and wound count in the screenie shows the times I had to restart the mission by killing all my soldiers, I pulled it off on my first run so I did a lot of mistakes but I dont plan on perfecting the score, Ill move on to the other achievements.

Well, I hope you have fun with this and dont worry too much about the score or putting your guys in danger to get the bonuses.

    Cheers!

Bug Hunting makes me feel good! I aint afraid of no bug! BugBusters!

The 2nd Legacy Operation took me a whole day to complete, this time the score to beat is 300000.

Dont worry though, there will be plenty of enemies to get your score up.

If you are interested in how scoring works, read out the guide for Deja Vu All Over Again which explains it.

But I wanted to create this guide here for special notes and tips for this scenario.

Im not 100% sure but maybe you can get gold in Story mode instead of nightmare, still, I didnt chance it and did it on nightmare on my first try.

Your biggest enemies in this operation are enemy armor and turn limits, a lot of stages have limited turns and you are forced to rush through the map while them bugs spawn every turn. Not all stages but easily half of them.

Your specialist is good against machines like mechs and sectopods at least after stage 3 or stage 4.

The best way to rack up your score is to wait until the last minute and drain the map of all the bugs it will throw at you but take note: chryssalids that spawn from cocoons only give points once or twice, sometimes they dont even give points at all so dont think that sacrificing that civilian to spawn more bugs will give you more points, most of the time it isnt the case.

Central shines in this scenario, once he unlocks his bladestorm ability and you get him a katana, he does a whooping 11 damage with melee and anything that gets close to him dies. Put him near where the bugs spawn so they target him.

Be very careful with cocoon placement, once, a cocoon spawned a bug inside a wall and I couldnt get to it and it couldnt escape, basically ruining my run on that map, I had to restart.

The grappling hook helped me a lot, do get the spider suit upgrade if you can.

If you lingered in maps until the last minute and killed all the bugs you could, you should get 300k points after finishing stage 6, stage 7 is full of powerful enemies worth a lot of points though. Once you set the charges in stage 7, you have 5 turns to escape.

You need at least 1 operative to escape, I personally just sent Central and the mind controller dude to set the charges and hid the rest near the beginning of the stage.

Even though the explosion "kills" all agents that did not escape once the 5 turns are up, you do not get points deducted from their deaths.

Thats all, some people hate this scenario because it forces you to rush the maps but its good practice to rack up that score!

    Good luck, stay safe!

    • Zombies in a Barrel

During a lost mission you need to kill 15 lost using headshots (not grenades) in a single turn.

The first problem you will have for this is ammo and turns, most weapons have 3 to 5 shots and reloading spends one action.

The easiest way to counter this is, of course, to have a full squad of six people but you also have the sharpshooter which pistol does not need a reload.

The problem with the initial pistol is that it does little damage (2-3dmg), so to help with this, a better, more advanced pistol can be used.

However, you can still pull this off with 4 agents and beginning weapons.

The second problem is getting that many lost gathered around you without dying to the Horde.

This problem is very easy if you can find a building with fire escapes balconies.

Get your squad up there and blow all the fire escapes that lead to the floor you are in with grenades but one, the one you will defend.

Block the ladder with a squaddie so the lost cant climb up.

You can see a picture of the setup I used at the end of this small guide.

To get lost to spawn into a horde, use explosives or complete missions objectives until you need to escape (the lost will spawn until you evacuate or they reach a map limit (I think its 20 or 25 at the same time). Dont worry if you kill some, more will spawn until it reaches the spawned limit.

Anyway, once you have set it up, its time to rack in the headshots, make sure everyone has their weapon reloaded when the turn starts and that they dont have to move from their position, start with your sharpshooter and aim for the lost that only have 2HP, since your pistol does 2 to 3 damage, aiming for a sure kill is smart, check your aim % too. Once you are not able to kill anymore with that agent, switch to another one, if the ammo is spent, reload then continue.

You shouldnt have problems with this using this strategy.

    Cheers!

I can confirm this can still be obtained on a Mac. I tried on my Steam Deck but was unable to start a match.
