    Easiest way to farm gears (that I could find):

    Open up a Skirmish game as Alliance vs Alliance, Close mode, Hard difficulty.

    At the start, spam Miners until you hit the unit limit. Then, upgrade Fighter Hull and Weapon to level 2.
    After that, just spam Fighters until you win the game. Help your fighters with Repair and disable enemy units with EMP whenever possible.
    You should win the skirmish in about 2 minutes.

    You'll get 5 gears for winning the skirmish. You may find additional gears on the battlefield when you kill an enemy unit.
